Throttle Body

A look at the mid-'80s Ford truck twin throttle body that I acquired off of eBay.

The TB bores actually measure out to 50mm each, which is slightly less than 2 inches, at the butterfly end.

Just a few reference photos of how the TB looked when I got it.

By the way, I got it for $1.00. The thing cost more to ship from Canada...

How do you get this much crud in the intake tract of a port injected engine?

This is where the idle air control valve goes. I'll have to come up with a simple solenoid valve for this.

The gasket is from the Caddy/Olds EFI intake. I intend to make a 90-degree adapter to mount the TB horizontally. Looks like the tubes will have to angle slightly. The intake's ports are slightly larger at about 2-1/4".

After a good soak and scrub with purple cleaner. The sodium hydroxide in the "purple" cleaners tends to darken (oxidize) aluminum.

The purple stuff got all the grease and grunge off, but there's still some oxidation hanging about.

After some quality time with flying glass sand. I love how it works, but I _really_ need a blast cabinet - sandblasting is gritty and messy!

Bright and shiny! The casting is pretty rough, though. I still need to go after it with the Dremel and stones.

I taped over the throttle shaft bores to keep grit out of the bearings. They're sealed bearings, but just in case...

All pretty now.

Cleaned up the other bits as well. The butterflies will stay natural, but the steel parts will be painted a "steel" color, since most of the coating has worn off.

This is the throttle body as it's fitted stock. Note that the throttle attachment pulls to the right in the picture, which means that it pulls *down* if you mount the thing with the bores side-by-side. Rats.

Fortunately, Ford uses a similar TB in E-van applications (seen here on a 460 in a Bronco) which mounts the TB like I want to, and with a divored IAC. I either need to get the whole TB, or at least the throttle shaft and linkage. Oh, well, another trip to the bone yard.
