GSL-SE suspension swap pictures

I finally decided to swap the suspension from my poor, beat-up project '84 GSL-SE to my '79 GS. The Yokohama AVSis on my factory 13" wheels were about used up, and were no longer being made - they were probably the last decent performance street tire in 13". The SE suspension gets me bigger, better brakes, and a *much* more common 4x4.5" bolt pattern. 15" wheels and decent tires coming soon.

The two rear axles (SE on the left), headed for their new homes. A little wider shot of the exchange. The best part is that the blue SE on the right had been up in the air, rear axle-less, for over a week. The city code enforcement noticed :( Didn't have time to do the front swap immediately, so I got to drive around for a few weeks looking silly... The '84 SE struts were about 5mm longer than the '82s that were in the '79. This became important when I wanted to swap my Tokico cartridges to the SE struts. I managed to lose the spacers that came with the cartridges, so a substitue was necessary. These are electrical conduit lock nuts, modified as on the left.

A close-up of the modified conduit nuts. I just had to grint the castellations down to fit into the strut gland nut, and I flattened them a little (the conduit nuts are bowed slighty out towards the center in manufacturing) How the new spacer fits in the strut gland nut. How it fits from another angle. It took two spacers to keep the gland nut from bottoming out on the strut top. This leaves about 3-4mm of threads exposed.

'82 GSL strut on the left, '84 GSL-SE strut on the right. Just a little difference in brake size. Also note that the taller cartridges from the '84 struts had little trouble fitting in the '82 strut. The gland nuts for those cartridges was pretty tall. The '79 wearing 15" 626 Turbo wheels and 205/60-15 tires. They will be wrapped with shorter 205/50-15 tires when financially feasible. The tires shown here are hard as a rock, and only the two shown are the same size - that's what you get with boneyard finds. I intend to fit these wheels with Flaken Azenis in 205/50-15. The car is currently wearing a set of borrowed 14x6" Konig wheels with Yokohama S306 205/60-14 rubber (thanks, Tim!)

The Konig Tuners show off the brakes nicely, don't you think? Now if they wer only 15" or 16"...
